Sunday, March 22nd, 2009Agranulocytosis is characterized by a greatly decreased number of circulating white blood cells, usually less than 100 per micro liter of blood. This makes patients extremely vulnerable to infection. Common symptoms include fever, sepsis, mouth ulcers, skin infections, and other manifestations of infection. The causes for agranulocytosis include drugs, chemicals, infective agents, ionizing radiation, immune mechanisms and heritable genetic aberrations. This disease may be either hereditary or acquired.
